Lexi Thompson Drops Bombshell Hint on LPGA Return Mere Weeks After Retirement: ‘I Did Say..’
Over the years, mental health and pressure have pushed many top golfers to step away from the courses. This year, the LPGA saw a shocking count of 10 stars walking away from the game. Among them was the youngest golfer, Lexi Thompson, who made headlines by announcing her retirement back in May 2024. Thompson turned pro in 2012 and carved out an impressive career, racking up 11 LPGA wins, including a major championship and two Olympic wins. She became one of the most recognized faces in the LPGA, but that very devotion to the game took its toll, leading to her difficult decision to retire.
In her heartfelt retirement statement, she touched on the mental health struggles that contributed to her choice. “Since I was 12 years old, my life as a golfer has been a whirlwind of constant attention, scrutiny, and pressure. The cameras are always on, capturing every swing and every moment on and off the golf course,” she reflected.
This month, after finishing her last event at the Grant Thornton Invitational 2024 alongside Rickie Fowler, Thompson officially wrapped up her full-time professional golf career. Yet, throughout her retirement, she hinted at a desire to make a comeback. And guess what?
The LPGA pro posted a video on her Instagram story that has made fans beyond excited. On 28 December 2024, the 2-time Olympic winner was firing balls in her story at the 18-hole Panther National golf course. Not only this, she also didn’t forget to be true to her playful nature and added a cheeky note, “I did say from full time 😏.” This was a nod to her previous remarks about only stepping away from full-time events, assuring followers that we might still see her on the course in some capacity. It’s evident that you can’t completely detach from something that’s been a part of your life since childhood.
“Like I said before when I made the announcement, it’s just from full-time golf. I may tie it up a few times next year. A matter of when and what tournaments, I don’t know,” she reiterated after the CME Group Tour Championship. While the specifics regarding her return are still up in the air, there’s already buzzing speculation about which tournaments Thompson might choose to play in the upcoming season.
Lexi Thompson’s comeback in 2025?
Lexi Thompson is likely to play in all four majors on her schedule. Traditionally, she has skipped the Amundi Evian Championship due to a controversial Instagram post back in 2019, where she criticized the courses but later deleted it. Still, it’s almost a certainty that we’ll see her in the US Women’s Open, where her journey began.
It’s not too far-fetched to think that Lexi is eager to add at least one more major to her otherwise incomplete resume, especially with only one under her belt so far. So, we can reasonably expect the 29-year-old to take the course for all the majors—except for that one up in Evian-les-Bains.
On top of that, there’s a good chance she’ll also show up for the Annika Driven by Grainbridge at Pelican. Why? Well, for a couple of reasons. First, it’s in Florida, which is always a draw for her. Secondly, this tournament is the LPGA’s flagship event and honors one of the sport’s legends. This year, Brittany Lincicome snagged a sponsor’s exemption to participate, and if Lexi receives an invitation, you can bet she won’t pass up the chance to play at Pelican Golf Club. After all, she’s never missed this stop in the past few years and even finished solo second there in 2022. It’s going to be exciting to watch how her 2025 season unfolds!
