Lainey Wilson Recalls The Most Brutal Time in Her Career

It’s hard to grapple with grief, especially early on in life when you’re still trying to figure everything out for yourself. This is the case for Lainey Wilson, who spends the early portion of her career getting beat up by life. It causes her to have to start all over again when she had finally found her groove.

Recently, Wilson went on the Artist Friendly with Joel Madden podcast for an interview. There, she talks about her past, present, and future in country music. Additionally, Lainey candidly speaks about a devastating time in her life. Her grandfather’s close friend and songwriter Jerry Cupit got sick and passed away, causing Wilson to have to start all over. Even worse, she’s dating a guy at the time who cheated on her with a woman he ends up getting pregnant. “”I had to start over, from square one, and for me, it’s been a lot of moments like that where I’ve had to, I felt like, okay, I’ve got something going. It’s cooking. And then it kinda gets taken away, and I have to start over and switch gears and figure out a different way,” Lainey says.

“I think that’s another part of this business, coming up on a bunch of road blocks and figuring out how the hell to get around it. That was definitely a dark time in my life, because when you write 300 plus songs with somebody, you become really close. That was really hard, and during that time too, I was dating a boy who got a girl pregnant,” Lainey continues.

Lainey Wilson’s Life Falls Apart Early in Her Country Career

All this grief eventually compiles to the point where she starts wonder why it’s all happening to her. To try and cope, Wilson argues to herself that maybe this will all make good material for her in the end. Anything to try and grapple with the pain of it all. It was all happenin’ at the same time… I was like, when it rains, it pours. I’m telling you, I learned how to just embrace the heartbreak, ‘cuz I’m just like, is this happening to me? Like, am I getting punked? Is it happening just so I can have something to write about? But into now, I’m learning how to adjust with my life changing. It is a lot of pressure,” Lainey says.

Thankfully, she’s in a great position now and isn’t dealing with some dude cheating on her either. Now, Lainey is one of country’s biggest stars and has her current man Duck Hodges to fall back on when things get tough.
