Cadillac to join Formula 1 in 2026

Formula 1 (F1) has given the green light to American automaker Cadillac to become the 11th team to compete in the 2026 season.

F1 said it had reached an “agreement in principle” with General Motors (GM), Cadillac’s owner, to help bring a team to the track.

According to F1, Cadillac has achieved operational milestones throughout 2024 and has demonstrated its commitment to the GM/Cadillac brand for the 11th team.

GM aims to enter as an engine supplier after developing its own engines, but initially Cadillac cars will be powered by Ferrari engines.

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem said he was “fully supportive” of the GM/Cadillac team’s entry, and vowed to continue working together to ensure a smooth transition.

F1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali described the move as an important and positive sign for the sport’s development.

GM Chairman Mark Reus said: “It is an honour for General Motors and Cadillac to be involved in the world’s premier motorsport and we are committed to competing with passion and integrity to enhance the sport for motorsport fans around the world.”

F1 earlier this year rejected an offer from the Andretti team – owned by Michael Andretti, son of 1978 F1 world champion Mario Andretti.

GM recently announced that it has registered with the FIA to become an F1 engine manufacturer from 2028, contributing to Andretti’s efforts to participate in this race.
