‘American Idol’ Winner Attacked While Busking in New York City Subway
Born and raised in Harlem, New York, Just Sam, like many singers before them, took a chance when they appeared on American Idol. Hoping the show would propel them into the spotlight, the singer consistently showcased their talents when covering songs like “I Believe” and “Rise Up.” Dominating the show week after week, Just Sam eventually found their way into the finale, becoming the winner of season 18. Although thrilled about their success on American Idol, the singer recently shared they returned to busking to make ends meet, which led to them being attacked.
Although American Idol was the launching pad for numerous hit singers like Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, and Fantasia Barrino, Just Sam struggled when it came to breaking into the music industry. After winning American Idol, the singer struggled financially as their record label dropped them. Not having a great deal of money, Just Sam used their funds to purchase the songs they recorded. Having to busk to help make money, they shared a startling video showing them being attacked while trying to sing.
Showing the aftermath of the altercation, Just Sam told the individual to “Back Up” several times. Thankfully, the incident didn’t escalate as the singer returned to their cover of Beyonce’s “Irreplaceable.”
Just Sam Not Afraid As They Declare “God Is Always Protecting Us”
With the video not showing a great deal of how the altercation came about, Just Sam shared some information on Instagram. They wrote, “The woman in the video attacked me and my sister unprovoked… Nothing like this has ever happened to me before in all my many years of singing underground.” Although shaken by the event, the singer insisted, “We are okay and we are always safe. I never ever go to the trains alone. Thank you to everyone for having my back. We are great! God is always protecting us.”
While continuing to find their place in music, fans showered Just Sam with love and support. “Love you, Sam! You’re always the bigger person. Thank you for being the example. Never allow anyone to dim your bright light!!” And one comment added, “When the enemy sends distractions, that’s how you know you’re doing something right!”
