Actress Scarlett Johansson opens up about her family and parenting experiences in a new podcast episode.

The 1984-born “Black Widow” star is a mother of two. She has a 9-year-old daughter with ex-husband Romain Dauriac and a 2-year-old son with “Saturday Night Live” comedian Colin Jost, whom she married in 2020.

“When my daughter was 2, I was like, ‘Wow, this is great.’ And then when she was 3, I was like, ‘Oh my God, this is crazy.’ It was so drastic for me. My emotions were going up and down,” the actress said.

In her experience, Johansson found that nothing she did during that time was acceptable to her 3-year-old.

“I was so devastated with my toddler, like everything I did was wrong, it was so hard,” she confided.

Even though her daughter is grown now, Johansson says her family life is still full of ups and downs.

“My life is unbalanced,” says the actress and founder of skincare line The Outset. “I’m still searching for any kind of balance to improve things.”

After having children, Johansson said her perspective has also changed, especially when it comes to prioritizing family projects and work.

“Your perspective will definitely change, but it helps you, it helps the parts of your life fall into place,” she says.

I think when you have a whole to-do list, it makes your commute a lot more inconvenient. And that’s a big change.”

During an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show , the 40-year-old actress answered questions from her co-star Drew Barrymore, saying she doesn’t want her children to know about some of her problems.

“I think my daughter has asked me this before,” Johansson admitted. “I used to smoke when I was younger and I was ashamed of it. I just don’t want her to think that I ever thought smoking was cool. Honestly, I don’t want her to repeat my behavior when I was younger.”

I know, it’s strange that I forbid my children from doing things that I myself did. That’s why I feel ashamed and I never want them to know these secrets.”

Johansson added: “My daughter used to ask me: Why do you pluck your eyebrows? Why do you curl your eyelashes? What is a tampon? What is it for?… I prefer to answer questions like that.”

Although Rose – Johansson’s daughter – is at an age where she is curious about many things, Johansson admits that she still doesn’t show much interest in her little brother.

“She’s dealing with a lot of things going on in her life. She has a very active social network, so she hasn’t had time to focus on her brother,” Johansson told Jimmy Fallon on an episode of The Tonight Show.
