The Kansas City Chiefs saw their recent investment in DeAndre Hopkins pay off with a hard-fought 30-24 overtime win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday night. The Buccaneers, led by Baker Mayfield, put up a strong fight, taking the game to overtime after a late 10-play, 71-yard drive tied things up.
Mayfield‘s performance was one of his best this season, keeping the Buccaneers competitive against the Chiefs’ high-powered offense.
Despite this, the Chiefs ultimately secured the victory with a decisive overtime drive led by Patrick Mahomes, capped off by a two-yard game-winning touchdown from Kareem Hunt.
Mahomes had a brief injury scare in the fourth quarter with an ankle sprain but returned after Carson Wentz filled in briefly.
“I kind of awkwardly rolled the ankle a little bit. Definitely scary, I think I hurt it more cause it’s the same ankle I rolled last week,” Mahomes said. “Once I kind of took my breath and kind of calmed down a little bit, it ended up being not too bad.”
Hopkins stood out
Meanwhile, Hopkins, who joined the Chiefs only a few weeks ago, was a standout, recording eight catches for 87 yards and two touchdowns. His performance, along with Hunt‘s 106 rushing yards, showcased Kansas City’s offensive strength.
The Buccaneers fell to 4-5, but their performance left some fans optimistic, showing they could keep up with top teams even without key players such as Mike Evans and Chris Godwin.
Mayfield completed 23 of 31 passes for 200 yards and two touchdowns, although his unlucky overtime coin-toss call gave the Chiefs the first possession in extra time, ending his night without another chance to win.
