Unfortunately, goaltender Cayden Primeau doesn’t seem to be the solution in net for the Montreal Canadiens.
He’s had his chances over several seasons, and it’s simply not working out. It really feels like his days in Montreal are numbered.
In 54 career games in the National Hockey League, Primeau has a record of 13 wins, 24 losses, and 7 overtime losses, with a goals-against average of 3.64 and a save percentage of .886.
These are not impressive statistics, and this isn’t based on a sample size of just 5 or 6 games.
Cayden Primeau’s Final Season with the Montreal Canadiens?
While many fans and analysts are wondering when the association between Primeau and the Canadiens might end, the excellent Marc-Olivier Beaudoin may have just provided the answer.
«On the goalie situation in Montreal:
Cayden Primeau will be an RFA at the end of this season, and if the current trend continues, he likely won’t be qualified.»
– Beaudoin
This means that, even if Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton endure Primeau’s struggles all season and keep him with the Canadiens until the end of the campaign, all signs point to the goaltender leaving the organization on July 1, unless there’s a major turnaround on his part.
His contract is expiring, and in the past, Kent Hughes hasn’t hesitated to let certain players go unqualified.
If it were up to you, what would you do with Cayden Primeau?
It will be a fascinating situation to watch because Samuel Montembeault will eventually need some help.
Personally, I’m open to both options, whether it’s immediately giving Jakub Dobes or Connor Hughes a chance, or signing a veteran goaltender to support Samuel. (like a Jake Allen, for example)
