Renowned tennis journalist Jon Wertheim censured Nick Kyrgios for his controversial statements on Jannik Sinner. As Sinner did not face harsh punishment for failing a drug test twice, Kyrgios has been slamming him on social media and has also accused him of intentionally consuming the banned drug to enhance his performance.
While discussing the doping controversy on Andy Roddick‘s Served with Andy Roddick podcast, Wertheim stated that the real reason behind Kyrgios’ scathing remarks on Sinner is due to ex-girlfriend Anna Kalinskaya. The Russian tennis star, who dated Kyrgios in 2020, is in a relationship with the World No. 1.
Beyond the needles and the emojis, he demonstrated such a fundamental lack of understanding of facts, it makes you think this is not a good faith effort. You know, he’s the great hero who’s going to finally be the truth-teller who talks about how corrupt the sport is. That’s not what this is. This is just a personal vendetta. There is a woman involved here, who also happens to be a player.
Kyrgios criticized Wertheim for connecting his comments on Sinner to Kalinskaya. He said that the reason he has been vocal about the doping case is that he doesn’t ‘like people who are cheating the system’.
Felix Auger-Aliassime compares Jannik Sinner to Roger Federer
Jannik Sinner was the most successful men’s player in 2024. He clinched eight titles on the tour and ended the season with a 73-6 win-loss record. Three of these wins came in the finals of the Australian Open, US Open, and ATP Finals.
We have always known his [Sinner’s] qualities, but the year he just finished has been one of a kind, and he also started beating some guys he was struggling with up until that point. The year he had was like Roger Federer’s in 2005 or 2006.
Felix Auger-Aliassime said on The Slice Tennis podcast
In 2006, Federer, apart from his 94.84% win-loss percentage, reached all the Grand Slam finals, winning three. He stood on top of the rankings table throughout the year and also won the ATP Finals.
The 20-time Grand Slam champion is enjoying life after retirement. Sinner, on the other hand, has a long way to go. Next week, he will be bidding to win the Australian Open for the second time in a row.
