Celtics rookie Baylor Scheierman drops 31 points in G League debut
Boston Celtics rookie Baylor Scheierman wasted no time getting himself acclimated to the G League on Friday after tying a team high in scoring to lead the Maine Celtics against the Long Island Nets.
Scheierman produced 31 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, two blocked shots and one steal in the 129-123 loss on the road to begin the G League season. He finished by shooting 12-of-20 from the field, including 6-of-13 from 3-point range, in 36 minutes off the bench.
The 30th pick scored 13 points alone in the third quarter to help the Celtics erase an 11-point halftime deficit and briefly take the lead in the period. He looked to have good chemistry with his teammates, including two-way guard JD Davison, who also had 31 points.
Scheierman has been out of the rotation to begin the season with Boston, totaling just four points and four rebounds in 18 minutes across three appearances. He has spent time with Maine this week ahead of its season opener, with practice time limited in Boston.
The 24-year-old will likely continue to shuttle between Boston and Maine to see consistent minutes on the court and maximize his development in his rookie season. In his first extended run, he looked comfortable and showed no signs of any issues transitioning to the G League competition.
Scheierman projects to see sporadic minutes with Boston this season. He was viewed as one of the most NBA-ready prospects in the draft and should be able to contribute to the team once his number is called by coach Joe Mazzulla.
