After one of the Vikings’ scoring drives, the NBC broadcaster hailed Darnold’s impact.

He said: “I think Kevin O’Connell just told us exactly what he thinks about his young quarterback, in Sam Darnold.”

It was his choice of words to describe the 27-year-old quarter-back as “young” that stumped fans.

They flooded social media to beg Collinsworth to hang up his microphone.

One posted: “Cris Collinsworth man…. retire or something, PLEASE.”

A second commented: “Cris Collinsworth, you gotta go, bro. Please retire.”

A third wrote: “Can we retire Cris Collinsworth? He’s clueless up there.”

A fourth said: “I’m sorry, but Cris Collinsworth needs to retire.”

Another added: “I can’t wait for Cris Collinsworth to retire from broadcasting.”

While 27 is not old for a quarterback in the NFL, it is nowhere near as old as the likes of Peyton Manning and Tom Brady, who retired at the ages of 39 and 44.

Darnold has had a strange career as he was drafted in 2018 at the age of 20.

He was widely considered a bust after being the third overall pick at the time.

However, he has finally come in good this season with the Vikings.

Meanwhile, NFL legend Tom Brady escaped punishment from the NFL after his controversial comments.

The seven-time Super Bowl champion criticized a referee’s decision live on broadcast, which is not allowed as a team owner.
