New York Jets have eyes on key Chiefs executive to turn the team around

The New York Jets are making some wholesale changes this winter after suffering through a failed run with Aaron Rodgers toward contention. And they might be asking a key member of the Kansas City Chiefs front office to lead them out of the darkness.

ESPN reporter Adam Schefter has word that the Jets have requested permission to interview Mike Borgonzi for the role of general manager as they search for new leadership.

It seems like it’s finally time for Mike Borgonzi to get his shot running a franchise.

Super Bowl flashback: Mike Borgonzi

The Jets fired their former GM Joe Douglas earlier this season, and Borgonzi’s name was floated even then as a potential replacement.

Borgonzi is plenty qualified to take over a front office at this point in his career after serving with the Chiefs for 16 seasons. He spent time with Scott Pioli only to survive the transition to John Dorsey and now to Brett Veach, climbing the organizational ladder all the while. He’s held the title of assistant GM with the Chiefs for the last four seasons.

Borgonzi’s name has been mentioned as a potential future GM in NFL circles going back to 2020, at least in a public-facing forum. Last winter, he also interviewed for the role of GM with the Washington Commanders, who ended up hiring Adam Peters away from the San Francisco 49ers.

The Jets went 5-12 this past season and finished third in the AFC East.
