Roger Federer has revealed the big secret to winning Carlos Alcaraz winning Wimbledon titles year after year, but it’s likely to annoy some tennis diehards.

Federer retired as the greatest men’s Wimbledon champion of all time, having mastered the grass court by winning eight titles at the All England Club.

Granted, Federer was consistently strong in the other three Grand Slams as well, but it was SW19 where the Swiss star looked most at ease.

While Alcaraz is unlikely to reach the heights Federer managed during his glittering career, the 21-year-old has already made a hefty dent into the all-time Wimbledon title record.

July’s final victory against Novak Djokovic was his second gentlemen’s title at Wimbledon, with Alcaraz a chunk of the way to emulating Federer’s iconic four-peat from the mid-2000s.

As if he needs any more pointers, the record Wimbledon champion has told Alcaraz what he needs to do if he wishes to emulate Federer’s grasscourt career.

When asked by Stan Sport if Alcaraz can topple World No.1 Jannik Sinner at January’s Australian Open, Federer replied: “Of course he can. And if you win all the other different majors, I mean, you can win Australia.

“He’ll be physically perfectly prepared. It’s not something, you know, like Wimbledon, where maybe you’ve got to skip the French Open if you want to give yourself the best chance, or if clay is not your surface, you’ve got to do an extra effort.”

Suggesting Alcaraz skips the French Open to give himself more time to practice on grass isn’t the advice traditionalists want to hear.

Typically, the best players play in the biggest tournaments – something which most people would consider a non-negotiable.

But perhaps Federer’s comments point to the changing landscape in tennis, both on the ATP and WTA Tours.

WTA world No.1 Iga Swiatek has complained in the past about the schedule being too demanding, hinting if things continued to – in her eyes – get worse, players might have to carefully pick and choose what tournaments they compete in, Grand Slams included.

One Slam Alcaraz is unlikely to be turning down an invite to is the Australian Open – because of its timing at the beginning of the year and it’s the only Slam he doesn’t have his hands on… yet.

On Alcaraz’s misfortune in Melbourne so far, Federer added: “He’ll win an Australian Open, question is when.

“He’s had the most incredible career already. I mean, it’s fantastic that he’s already got four slams without talking about all the other stuff that he’s already achieved. Fantastic effort.”
