There are moments in a career that simply stand out as once-in-a-lifetime experiences, and for Jelly Roll, his recent performance with Eminem in Detroit is one of those unforgettable moments. The country star had the honor of joining the iconic rapper on stage for an epic duet of “Sing for the Moment” during the Live From Detroit: The Concert at Michigan Central on June 6. Jelly Roll couldn’t help but express his excitement and disbelief about the collaboration, calling it “the coolest moment ever” in a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight.
Reflecting on the surreal experience, Jelly Roll shared, “When I think about the coolest moments of my career, right now at the top, there has to be this thing that I got to go sing with Eminem in Detroit.” He went on to highlight the significance of the song itself, a track where Eminem sampled Steven Tyler’s iconic vocals from Aerosmith’s “Dream On.” For Jelly Roll, performing this song in the rapper’s hometown added another layer of magic to the night. “Just what an incredible night, and I got to go do it in Detroit. It was unreal.”
The collaboration came about when Eminem’s team reached out to Jelly Roll, which the singer initially couldn’t believe. “I thought it was a joke until I met Eminem himself,” Jelly Roll admitted. Even though he knew Eminem’s manager Paul and considered him a friend, he was still in disbelief when the opportunity became real. “I was like, ‘Paul, don’t play.’ He was like, ‘I swear,’” Jelly recalled, adding that meeting Eminem in person was a dream come true.
On stage, Jelly Roll couldn’t contain his excitement, describing the experience as one that made him feel like a “giddy child.” He confessed that his inner fanboy took over, even forgetting that the cameras were still rolling. “You could see it all over my performance. Just the kid in me,” he laughed. “I thought the camera was off of me. So as soon as I get through singing, I’m like, ‘Whoa.’ I just let this steamroller out. It’s really cool.”
For Jelly Roll, performing alongside one of his musical heroes in Eminem’s hometown of Detroit is undoubtedly a career highlight, a testament to the power of unexpected collaborations and the magic that can happen when two artists from different genres come together. It’s a moment that will surely be remembered by both fans and performers alike for years to come.
