Nikola Jokic surpasses legend Magic Johnson, moves up to NBA’s elite list

Nikola Jokic is now behind only two names on the NBA’s all-time triple-double list, one of whom is his current teammate on the Denver Nuggets.

Reigning NBA MVP Nikola Jokic just achieved a triple-double in his 139th career game on December 6, helping him surpass the legendary Magic Johnson to rise to third place on the NBA’s all-time list.

Previously, Magic needed 880 games to bring home 138 triple-doubles. For Jokic, it took him only 692 games to surpass the former Los Angeles Lakers star.

Playing 40 minutes against the formidable opponent Cleveland Cavaliers, Jokic scored 27 points, grabbed 20 rebounds and added 11 assists. But despite his best efforts, “The Joker” still could not help the Denver Nuggets win, falling 114-126 to the number 1 team in the East.

“ Statistics, achievements and records like this always bring joy, I am very honored and proud, and also grateful to my teammates who helped me achieve it.

It’s a bit of a shame that the triple-double move didn’t come with a win, but it’s still a special milestone ,” Nikola Jokic said after the game.

With 139 career triple-doubles, Nikola Jokic is now behind only two players on the NBA’s all-time list.

Second place belongs to the legendary Oscar Robertson with 181 triple-doubles. The leader with 200 triple-doubles is Russell Westbrook, who is also Jokic’s current teammate at Denver Nuggets.

In addition, ESPN also pointed out that from the 2017-18 season until now, Nikola Jokic has always had at least 10 triple-doubles each season. In the 2022-23 NBA championship season alone, “Joker” set a personal record with 29 triple-doubles.
Nikola Jokic has had at least 10 triple-doubles every season since 2017-18. In the last two seasons, he had 29 and 25 triple-doubles, respectively.
Nikola Jokic, 29, is one of the best centers in the NBA. He is a 6-time All-Star, 3-time MVP, has an NBA championship ring and the 2023 Finals MVP title.

This season alone, the Denver Nuggets star is hitting career-highs in every stat, including 29.9 points, 13.4 rebounds , and 10.4 assists per game.  If he can maintain those stats through the 2024-25 season, Jokic will replicate what Westbrook has done four times in his career: averaging a triple-double.
