Jennifer Lopez emotionally revealed she has been abused by her past partners, although admitted she has never been beaten by them, as she prepares for court action in her divorce from Ben Affleck.
The singer announced her split from the famous actor, known for his roles as the DCEU’s Batman and in Pearl Harbor, citing irreconcilable differences and revealing they had been separated since April.
Now as she prepares to play the survivor of domestic abuse in her upcoming movie, Unstoppable, the role is personally important to her after he past experiences with some of her partners.
“There were people in my life who said ‘I love you’,” Lopez said in 2024’s The Greatest Love Story Never Told documentary of her life. “And then didn’t do things that were kind of in line with the word ‘love.’
“Being thrown around and manhandled like that is not fun. I mean, I was never in a relationship where I got beat up, thank God, but I’ve definitely been manhandled and a couple of other unsavory things. Rough. Disrespectful.”
Lopez‘s ex-partners include Sean Bombs, Alex Rodriguez, Tommy Mottola, Ojani Noa, Cris Judd, Marc Anthony, and Affleck, although she did not say who the abuser was in this particular context.
The Jenny from the Block singer is set to divorce Affleck, who she married in 2022 after beginning dating in 2020, following the decline of their relationship that saw them spend their birthdays and anniversary apart.
Affleck even moved out of their shared home and into a secluded property, despite serving as producer on The Greatest Love Story Never Told in news that perhaps didn’t shock fans but was unexpected with the timing of the documentary.
Lopez promotes her new movie
The 55-year-old American icon was at the Toronto International Film Festival to promote her movie during which she entertained a Q&A with her adoring and excited fans.
Playing the role of the mother of Anthony Robles, the NCAA champion wrestler born with only one leg, she admitted Judy Robles‘ struggle with domestic abuse is what drew her to the role through her own shared experiences.
“When I read the script,” Lopez said to the audience. “I felt like so many women including myself could relate to the struggles that she had gone through in her life.
“And the story, being a Latino story, being so inspiring. It was something that kind of grabbed me. And I was, like, OK, this is really really interesting.
“Just talking to her I realized we’re almost the same person in a weird way even though we’re so different and had such different lives – that at the core, in the heart of who we were, first we were moms. And beyond that we had similar struggles.”
