Jelly Roll has been on a winning streak since he crossed over to country music with his 2023 album Whitsitt Chapel.
Earlier this year, he released his sophomore country album Beautifully Broken to massive success. The album topped the Billboard 200 all-genre albums chart as well as the publication’s Top Country Albums survey. Now, the album’s lead single, “I Am Not Okay” has achieved a Platinum certification from the RIAA.
Jelly Roll co-wrote “I Am Not Okay” with Taylor Phillips, Ashley Gorley, and Casey Brown. The song was a runaway success upon its release in June. It climbed to the top of the Billboard Country Airplay chart and landed in the top 3 of the Hot Country Songs chart. A crossover hit, the song also landed in the top 20 of the all-genre Hot 100 chart. Additionally, the track is up for two Grammy Awards. “I Am Not Okay” garnered nods for Best Country Song and Best Country Solo Performance.
Jelly Roll Turns Vulnerability into Success
One thing that sets Jelly Roll apart from many mainstream artists is his vulnerability. He’s open and honest about his struggles with mental health and addiction. More importantly, that willingness to talk about his struggles carries over into his music. Songs like “I Am Not Okay” and “Save Me” are prime examples of that.
Before he crossed he became one of the hottest names in country music, Jelly shared his struggles in a series of mixtapes titled Therapeutic Music. The fifth and final installment of the series is available to stream on Spotify now.
“I think vulnerability is kind of my superpower,” he told Kelly Clarkson earlier this year. “I was a typical angry…always aggressive kind of guy for a long time. I just almost had a mean spirit about me and it didn’t serve me no good,” he added. “My heart changed, I got a relationship with God, I had a child, I got married to a woman that’s just the greatest woman on earth, and immediately it softened my heart,” he said of how much he has changed in recent years. “Now, vulnerability is my superpower.”
