Coco Gauff apologized to the crowd and had her on-court interview cut short after beating Leylah Fernandez at the Australian Open. The American eased through in straight sets but joked she gave away “too much information” about her outfit while speaking afterwards.
Gauff previously revealed that her bright yellow clothes were inspired by Marvel. She was asked again about her style after beating Fernandez.
Asked if the comfort matched the striking design, the 20-year-old said: “Yes. It’s definitely comfortable. A lot of people were wondering how I use the bathroom in it, so I posted a video on my Instagram story… not like actually demonstrating! Just… No, that’s TMI! Sorry guys!”
The crowd burst into laughter as Gauff continued: “I don’t know when to shut up. The designers at New Balance are absolutely incredible. We put together all the ideas that I want and they make a design out of it. I promise you I’m not playing in anything uncomfortable because comfort is always No. 1.”
Technical issues repeatedly interrupted Gauff’s interview. She had to restart her answers to at least two questions, with the sound from the microphone not playing inside the Margaret Court Arena.
She was quizzed on why her team have not been positioned in the new coaching pods used for this year’s Australian Open. Gauff began her answer before claiming that she had been “cut off” and walked away from the interview.
“I told them to do whatever they wanted to do. Maybe my view is that a united club… JT was on the bench. Maybe he did not like that experience!” she said.
“Maybe he chose to go in the box. It’s their decision. I’m a player, I don’t like to hear too much. But I did put my towel over there so if they need to tell me something, I’m there to listen. Overall, less is more. They prep me a lot before the match.

The microphone sound cut out again and Gauff added: “Okay, they’re cutting me off, I have to go guys!”
She saw the funny side and continued to wave to the crowd. Gauff overcame Fernandez 6-4 6-2 in a routine victory in Melbourne. She will continue her quest for a second Grand Slam title when she faces Belinda Bencic in the fourth round on Sunday.
