Mexico City is the most populous city in North America. As NBA fans expect to see an NBA team from Mexico, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver recently hinted at expanding the league to include a team in Mexico City.
Silver attended a game between the Miami Heat and Washington Wizards in Mexico City and took the opportunity to share his thoughts with The Athletic. Silver expressed his honest opinion on having a franchise in the vibrant city.
“Being direct, it’s highly unlikely Mexico City would jump above U.S. cities that are currently under consideration,” Silver said.
While the prospect of a team in Mexico City may be remote for now, Silver indicated that discussions about league expansion are ongoing. One compelling reason for considering Mexico City is its massive population. With over 130 million people in the country, Silver shared the potential impact of bringing the NBA to this market.
“In many ways, Mexico City would be more additive. Flipping a switch in a country of 130 million people and 22 million people here in Mexico City. And so not just from a business standpoint, but in terms of generating more interest and enthusiasm around the game,” he added.
Adam Silver Acknowledges Need For Change In All-Star Game Structure
Adam Silver announced on Saturday night that the league is considering changes to the All-Star Game format. This announcement comes after feedback from players, indicating a desire for a more competitive and entertaining event.
“We’re looking at other formats. I think there’s no doubt that the players were disappointed as well in last year’s All-Star Game. We all want to do a better job providing competition and entertainment for our fans,” Silver said.
The upcoming 2024-2025 season will mark the 74th edition of the NBA All-Star Game. Meanwhile, it is scheduled to take place in February 2025.
