Whoopi Goldberg admits she spread false rumors to expose ‘The View’ mole.
“We did that to see who was talking,” Goldberg said, nodding to Joy Behar at the Hot Topics table.
The legendary actress, who often heads the Whoopi Goldberg War Room — which traditionally focuses on outside offensives aimed at everything from controversial topics to unruly co-hosts — has revealed that the operation once launched a covert intelligence mission aimed at exposing an internal gossip mole at The View.
The 68-year-old host and Ghost star told this inside story during Thursday’s Hot Topics segment, in which she and her co-hosts discussed the dangers of gossip in social and professional circles.
“You know what I like to do? I like to try to expose gossip. Because you can plant false information and see if it gets around,” said conservative co-host and former Trump White House staffer Alyssa Farah Griffin, reminding Goldberg that she too had orchestrated an undercover mission to expose a leaker on The View.
“We did that, we did that,” Goldberg repeated, looking at Joy Behar. “We did that to see who was talking. Yes.”
Behar initially reacted with confusion before muttering an “oh” to the audience as if recalling a flashback from the battlefield.
“Look, that’s a little gossip I’d like to know,” legal expert Sunny Hostin quipped, drawing laughter from the audience just before the show cut to a commercial break.
During the Meghan McCain era of the show, The View was plagued by a number of press leaks, including stories in Page Six that mentioned alleged behind-the-scenes tensions between McCain and her co-hosts. McCain eventually left the show in 2021 and later criticized the program and her former colleagues on her podcast Meghan McCain Has Entered the Chat and in subsequent interviews.
