Argentine tennis star Diego Schwartzman fell victim to theft during a practice session. Upon returning to his car, he found “everything stolen” after his windows were smashed in.
This isn’t the first time the former world No. 8 has had his belongings taken – his hotel room was burgled during the 2022 Eastbourne International.
Schwartzman revealed on Instagram that his car was broken into while he was training, sharing images of the shattered glass inside his Jeep. “Get out of the court and everything stolen,” he captioned the post in Spanish, adding an Argentine flag and a broken-heart emoji.
The four-time title winner is currently preparing for his retirement, which will take place at next year’s Argentina Open.
Since announcing his retirement in May, Schwartzman has been on something of a farewell tour, including a retirement ceremony at the U.S. Open where he qualified for the main draw but lost to Gael Monfils.

Despite the recent theft, Schwartzman still has a keepsake from his latest Grand Slam appearance – his U.S. Open tumbler, visible in the cup holder of the photos of his damaged car. Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time Schwartzman has experienced theft – he was one of two players affected by a hotel burglary during the ATP 250 event in Eastbourne two years ago.
Spanish tennis player Pedro Martinez had a Rolex filched from his room, confessing that the theft played havoc with his on-court performance. His fellow competitor, Schwartzman, similarly lost at the tournament following a similar incident of theft.
“Yes, it was difficult. I had a watch stolen from my room yesterday and Schwartzman had some items also stolen from his room,” admitted Martinez. “I had a bad night, that’s the truth. I didn’t sleep. Today was difficult to prepare [for] the match but I just tried to focus on playing.
“When I arrived in the room I realised that my watch wasn’t there. I searched throughout the room, it was not there and when I went to reception to communicate to the people, then Diego came 15 minutes after, telling the same.”
Police had acknowledged the thefts, with an official statement reading: “We can confirm we received reports of two separate burglaries at the Hydro Hotel in Mount Road, Eastbourne, on Monday 20 June,” it said.
“A number of high value items including watches and bags were stolen, along with cash and some personal items. The incidents are being investigated and we have no further information at this time.”
