Stallone will no longer be returning to lead the reboot.

Cliffhanger is a 1993 film starring Sylvester Stallone in which he is haunted by a failed rescue attempt and returns to the mountains to help survivors.

The action-adventure film was announced to have a reboot in May 2023 with Stallone reprising his role.

However, it has now been revealed that the film is completely shifting its creative direction, with original director Ric Roman Waugh no longer returning to direct it.

Now actress Lily James (CinderellaMamma Mia! Here We Go Again) will be replacing Stallone’s main character with Jaume Collet-Serra directing.

The cast also includes Pierce Brosnan, Nell Tiger Free, Bruno Gouery, Assaad Bouab, and Suzy Bemba.

The reboot has been described as a “father-daughter take on Die Hard“, being based on a story by Ana Lily Amirpour.

The synopsis of the film shares how Ray Cooper (Brosnan) and daughter Naomi (James) go on a weekend trip and become witnesses to an attack.

James’ character must confront her fears and her past whilst she fights to save her family.

Filming is currently underway in Austria.

“Lily in particular has gone above and beyond for the role, putting in real training and learning to climb.”

“Her dedication has allowed us to capture some incredible shots we couldn’t have achieved otherwise, and the whole crew is blown away by her commitment.”

Director Serra shared how committed the cast has been, especially James, in learning to climb and being involved in all aspects of the film’s production.

She also shared how filming on location will hopefully bring a more exciting and realistic feel to cinema viewers.

“Shooting our movie on location in the Dolomites using large format cameras was imperative for us to show the scope and scale of the story we’re telling.”

“We’re going to bring the audience a truly thrilling and visceral, premium theatrical experience.”
