John McEnroe told Team Europe he was “p***ed off” after losing his last ever Laver Cup. Both McEnroe and Bjorn Borg are stepping down from their captaincy roles after seven years. And the American had made it very clear that he wanted to go out on a high.
But Team World were denied a hattrick of Laver Cup victories as Carlos Alcaraz defeated Taylor Fritz to clinch victory in the fourth and final match of the day.
Ahead of this year’s Laver Cup, McEnroe declared that he wanted to “go out on a high”. After losing the first four editions of the tournament, Team World had won the last two on the bounce and were going for a three-peat.
They came within touching distance when Frances Tiafoe led Alexander Zverev by a set and a break in the third match on Sunday, with Team World needing just one more win to retain the trophy. But the German stormed back to win in front of his home crowd.
It meant everything came down to the last match – Alcaraz vs Fritz – and the Spaniard delivered the final blow. Afterwards, McEnroe made his feelings very clear.
“I want to congratulate Team Europe, you’re p***ing me off but that’s okay!” the seven-time Major champion laughed.

“What can you do? We battled our best.” McEnroe then paid tribute to two important figures at the Laver Cup as he held the microphone as Team World captain for the final time.
“I’m sure everyone knows that Rod Laver is my idol so this was the easiest job offer I’ve ever had to accept. It’s been an absolute blast to do this. Rod, thank you so much,” he said, addressing the man who inspired Roger Federer and Tony Godsick to create the tournament.
“A special thanks to my great rival, I love you man. Bjorn Borg. Thank you for being on the other side.”

Borg also had a heartfelt message for his long-time rival after getting one final win in his last year leading Team Europe.
The Swedish tennis icon said: “I’m going to miss you, John, a lot. Of course we’re going to see each other but for us, we’ve been seven years.
“And I remember when Roger called me in Ibiza and said, ‘Do you want to be captain for Team Europe?’ That was eight years ago so I didn’t really know what to say but I was very happy to say yes.
“And he said too that John is going to be the captain for the rest of the World. We’ve been having good fun, even if you guys lost!”
