While Novak Djokovic could spend his retirement in a multi-million-pound mega-mansion, the tennis great has opted for a low-profile penthouse in Belgrade.
Djokovic has a humble abode in Serbia
Novak Djokovic will spend his retirement in a humble penthouse in Belgrade instead of splashing the cash on a lucrative multi-million-pound mega-mansion. At 37, the Serbian tennis great is proving to the world that he still has game in his locker.
Despite failing to win a title at the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon or the US Open in 2024, Djokovic captured his first career Golden Slam at the Paris Olympics – besting Carlos Alcaraz in the final match of the Games. Add that to his 24 career grand slams, and it’s easy to see why many fans consider Djokovic to be the greatest tennis player of all time.
Thanks to his incredible career on the courts and lucrative sponsorship and endorsement deals with the likes of Lacoste, Waterdrop, Head and Asics over the years, the tennis great has a reported net worth of around £28.5million ($37.2M). And while Djokovic could choose to live anywhere in the world when he finally decides to step away from the sport, he has instead decided to reside in a humble penthouse in Belgrade.
But what does his retirement abode look like, what features does it have, and how much did it cost? Here, Express Sport breaks it down…
A stunning penthouse overlooking Lake Pavlova
Thanks to his tennis career, Djokovic has owned several properties worldwide. He first purchased a quaint Monte Carlo residence for an undisclosed fee shortly after turning pro in 2003. While much remains unknown about the abode, it is said to be on a hill overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.
The player also purchased two properties in New York City’s SoHo area in 2017 for a reported fee of more than $10 million (£7.6m), a $5.77 million (£4.4m) penthouse in Miami, and a $10million (£7.6m) Moroccan-style property in Marbella in 2020. However, his retirement home comes in the form of a humble penthouse apartment, which overlooks the stunning Lake Pavlova.
Djokovic picked up the apartment for just £518,000 in 2018, although it is understood that the pro has spent money modernizing the three-bed pad in his home nation. The property also boasts three bathrooms and an en-suite, as well as a large living area – while it also comes complete with a stunning terrace and a swimming pool.
Djokovic’s penthouse in Belgrade
Nearby, the tennis star also has the famous Restaurant Novak, which was opened by his parents. Jam-packed with memorabilia from his illustrious career, from photos to tennis balls and even trophies, the swanky eatery pays homage to some of Djokovic’s greatest feats.
There’s also the Novak Tennis Center which was constructed in 2009, playing host to 14 courts in total for both locals and tourists to make the most of. Djokovic also has a lot of love for Belgrade in general, having received a hero’s welcome from fans in their thousands of gatherings to congratulate his win at this year’s Olympic Games.
Speaking to the crowd alongside his fellow compatriots from the City Hall, he said: “I have had the honour and pleasure of being on this special balcony several times in my career, but each time you surprise and inspire me more and more. This is the most beautiful feeling that an athlete from Serbia can experience.”
