Adrian Wojnarowski Scandal Is Real Reason He Is Leaving ESPN?
Adrian Wojnarowski made a stunning announcement on Wednesday morning indicating that he was retiring from sports media and leaving ESPN.
Given that he is widely regarded as the most respected voice in NBA reporting, Wojnarowski’s abrupt decision to leave the industry caught people off guard.
In a week of sports media news primarily dominated by Charissa Thompson’s ‘inappropriate’ outfit to NFL on FOX and Mina Kimes’ wild outfit to Monday Night Football, Wojnarowski completely stole the show.
Shortly after Wojnarowski made his announcement, a report surfaced that he was leaving ESPN to become the general manager of the men’s basketball program at St. Bonaventure – his alma mater.
“It is a thrill of a lifetime to be able to return to a university and community that I love in a role of service to our student-athletes, coaches and institution,” Wojnarowski told ESPN.
“I am hopeful that I can bring value in a lot of areas to our basketball program and open doors for our young men’s futures in ways both professionally and personally.”
According to NFL insider Adam Schefter, Wojnarowski simply wanted a break.
“He wanted his life back. He didn’t want to have to work on holidays. He didn’t want to be away from more family gatherings,” Schefter said of his colleague’s retirement.
“He didn’t want to have to, as we had to do in the past, take a shower with your phone up against the shower door so you can see a text that’s coming in, or take your phone with you to the urinal and hold it in one hand while you take care of your business in the other. That’s the life that we live. And that was the life he chose not to do any longer because it takes over your life.
“You can’t kind of do the job. You have to live the job and he was done living the job. He wants to go live his life and work for a school and give back to younger athletes.”
That said, not everyone bought this version of why Wojnarowski opted to so suddenly step down.
Folks on social media are convinced he is mired by a scandal that will come out eventually:
Time will tell if the conspiracy theorists end up being right, but for now it doesn’t seem like Wojnarowski has anything to hide.
Will he ever return to NBA media, though? Time will tell.
