Coco Gauff revelaed drawing inspiration from three-time WNBA MVP A’ja Wilson following her victory at the WTA 1000 China Open. Gauff outlasted Karolina Muchova 6-1, 6-3 on Sunday to get her first singles championship since January. The 2023 US Open women’s singles winner rolled into Beijing facing mounting pressure due to an underwhelming season.

Gauff lost in the fourth round at Wimbledon before suffering a similar exit at the US Open where she was the defending champion. Both of her losses came at the hands of compatriot Emma Navarro. She changed her support group and headed to China to use the event as a “practice” week.

The Atlanta, Georgia native had this to say following her slump-busting victory (via WTA):

“People don’t realize people have great moments in sports and bad moments. It doesn’t mean anything. I took inspiration from A’ja Wilson. Back-to-back champions. People wanted them to three-peat. She’s kind of like, ‘It’s hard to stay winning all the time.’

“You need to go through losses to realize what you need to do to evolve. Tennis fans need to be more accepting of that.”

While Coco Gauff competed in China, A’ja Wilson’s Las Vegas Aces were dethroned by the New York Liberty in a rematch of last year’s finals. The Aces’ 76-62 loss on Sunday ended the two-year reign in the WNBA. Gauff, however, took lessons from Wilson and Co.’s defeat.

Coco Gauff called A’ja Wilson inspirational in their first meeting at the Paris 2024 Olympics

Coco Gauff met A’ja Wilson for the first time before Team USA got on a boat for the Paris Olympics opening ceremony. When the youngster met the WNBA legend, the tennis star couldn’t stop being a fan.

Gauff said to Wilson:

“I love you so much! You’re so inspirational!”

The No. 2 women’s singles tennis player opened up to the three-time WNBA MVP that she used to play basketball but “wasn’t any good.” Wilson responded that Gauff is just “amazing.”

Gauff called Wilson an inspiration but the 20-year-old played that role during the opening ceremony. She was voted by Team USA teammates to be the flag-bearer, the youngest athlete to get that distinction. Gauff stood beside NBA icon LeBron James, the other flag-bearer.
