After failing to agree to terms on a new contract, former Boston Bruins goaltending prospect Reid Dyck has joined the Utah Hockey Club.
Reid Dyck was once ranked as one of the top goaltending prospects for the 2022 draft class but fell all the way down to the Boston Bruins at 183rd overall. A towering 6’4″ and only 20 years old, Dyck was an excellent starter for the Swift Current Broncos last season. But despite his upside and the Bruins’ rather questionable goalie situation right now, the team never did sign him to a contract.
This move is considered even more puzzling because, in the most recent moves, the Bruins traded Linus Ullmark, the 2023 Vezina Trophy winner, to the Ottawa Senators, thus leaving the team with the untested Brandon Bussi as their third-string option. With Jeremy Swayman still unsigned to an extension, letting Reid Dyck go seems like a pretty dicey choice of action.
Meanwhile, Reid Dyck isn’t sitting around doing nothing, as he is now attending training camp with the Utah Hockey Club, the former Arizona Coyotes franchise. Arizona relocated to their new Salt Lake City home courtesy of new owner Ryan Smith and the Smith Entertainment Group.
The Bruins seem to be all-in on Michael DiPietro over Reid Dyck, and that gamble might not pay off after all. The reason for this is that Reid Dyck had a fantastic season last year with the Swift Current Broncos of the WHL. He played in 35 games and had a stellar 25-7-2 record with a 2.70 GAA and a .911 save percentage.
