Janne Puhakka, the first openly gay man to ever play in the SM-Liiga in Finland was the victim of a senseless tragedy in the country, passing away at the age of 29.
The hockey world was shocked as it was learned that Janne Puhakka, a Finnish hockey player was a victim of a senseless crime in his native Finland, and tragically passing away.
Sadly, the primary suspect in the crime is Rolf Nordmo, Puhakka’s partner at the time according to Finnish news outlet Ilta-Sanomat, and currently an investigation is underway though authorities believe they have a timeline of events per Head Investigator Matti Högman. According to Högman, Nordmo surrendered peacefully and was not under any mental distress that would have caused an unprovoked attack. Högman also believes due to the nature of the crime, it won’t be long before justice is enacted:
“We suspect sound judgment and a particularly raw and cruel way of doing things.” Högman told Ilta-Sanomat
Who was Janne Puhakka?
Although unknown to most North American hockey fans, Puhakka was able to carve out a bit of a career for himself in Europe. Puhakka became the first person to play in the SM-Liiga as an openly gay player when he suited up for his hometown Espoo Blues in 2016-2017. He did spend two seasons in the QMJHL before heading back to Europe where he played in Finland as well as finishing his career in 2017-2018 in the Ligue Magnus; France’s highest level of pro hockey.
Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Janne Puhakka during this devastating time, and may they find justice for their fallen loved one.
