The WNBA has seemingly come of age, with revenue, attendance and ratings improving greatly this season.

That means that franchise values across the league are starting to appreciate, which means they could be a great investment.

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is one of those who seems interested, and he explained why he wants to bring a new WNBA team to Kansas City.

“I love sports, I know how much the city loves sports, so let’s bring as many sports in here and showcase how great Kansas City is,” Mahomes said, via Sports Radio 810 WHB.

Next season, the WNBA will add an expansion team in the San Francisco Bay Area, and in 2026 will expand to Toronto and Portland.

Cathy Engelbert, the commissioner of the league, said she’s confident there will be yet another expansion team for the 2028 season, and it could very well be one in Kansas City that Mahomes could be involved in.

At the same time, NBA star Jayson Tatum wants to bring a WNBA team to his hometown of St. Louis, so it could come down to those two markets.

If Mahomes wins that battle and gets a team, he wouldn’t be the only NFL player to be involved in ownership of a WNBA team.

Tom Brady holds a minority stake in the Las Vegas Aces, which was approved last October.

Mahomes, of course, is more concerned right now with bringing yet another title to his Chiefs, who are going for an unprecedented third straight Super Bowl championship.
