REPORT: Former Seattle Seahawks HC Pete Carroll Set To Interview With Surprise Team For Head Coaching Vacancy
Former Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll may get another shot at another HC gig before his 74th birthday.
After 14 seasons at the helm, Pete Carroll and the Seahawks “parted ways” last year. The organization reassigned him to an advisor role, with ex-Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald taking over as the new head coach.
According to a report from ESPN’s Dan Graziano and Jeremy Fowler, the Chicago Bears are set to interview Carroll for their head coaching position on Thursday. Chicago asked the Dallas Cowboys for permission to interview Mike McCarthy as well, but their request was denied.
The Bears fired head coach Matt Eberflus after a 4-8 start and replaced him with Thomas Brown, who lost four of five games as the interim HC. The New England Patriots, Las Vegas Raiders, New Orleans Saints, New York Jets and Jacksonville Jaguars also have head coach vacancies.
Carroll went 137-89-1 as the Seahawks’ head coach, leading them to two NFC Championship wins and a Super Bowl 48 title. From 2012 to 2023, Seattle only finished below .500 once (in 2021, when Russell Wilson missed time to injury).
The former USC Trojans head coach is just one of three HCs to win a national championship and a Super Bowl, along with Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer. Carroll’s 170 victories are tied for the 17th most all-time.
Pete Carroll Would Be An Excellent Hire By Bears
The Bears have been stuck with awful head coaching since they made the questionable decision to fire Lovie Smith after a 10-6 season in 2012. The best coach they’ve had since Smith’s firing was Matt Nagy, who also didn’t lead the team to a single playoff win.
But Carroll’s winning experience, defensive genius and ability to communicate well with his players would make him the ideal hire for a Chicago team that hasn’t won a playoff game since 2010.
