The New York Yankees are reportedly exploring ways to bolster their infield depth, and a familiar face has emerged as a potential option. With Gleyber Torres entering free agency and Jazz Chisholm offering flexibility at both second and third base, the Yankees are looking for cost-effective solutions to solidify their lineup.
Yankees eye reunion with Giants’ $4.7 million infielder Thairo Estrada
CBS
According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, the Yankees have expressed interest in bringing back former infielder Thairo Estrada, who currently plays for the San Francisco Giants. Estrada, who turns 29 in February, spent the early part of his career in pinstripes before moving to the Giants.
Estrada debuted with the Yankees in 2019 and served as a utility player during his two-season stint in the Bronx. While primarily handling middle infield duties, he also saw time at third base and even in the corner outfield positions. In 61 games with the Yankees, Estrada showcased his versatility, though his offensive numbers remained modest.
In 2021, Estrada was traded to the Giants for cash considerations, marking the start of a more prominent role in San Francisco. Over four seasons with the Giants, Estrada has appeared in 408 games, slashing .254/.303/.398 with a 96 OPS+, 44 home runs, and 180 RBIs. His defensive versatility remains a valuable asset, and he avoided arbitration with the Giants in 2024 by agreeing to a one-year, $4.7 million contract.
The Yankees’ offseason strategy will largely hinge on the outcome of their pursuit of superstar outfielder Juan Soto. The Soto negotiations, expected to conclude as early as Monday during the MLB Winter Meetings, will likely dictate how much financial flexibility the team has for other acquisitions.
If the Yankees secure Juan Soto, their budget for additional moves could tighten, making a reunion with Estrada a practical and affordable option. Estrada’s ability to play multiple positions and his familiarity with the organization would make him an attractive addition to a roster seeking depth without overspending.
While the Yankees have bigger questions to address this offseason, including their outfield and pitching needs, Estrada represents a low-risk, high-utility option for the infield. Whether or not a deal materializes will depend on how the Yankees prioritize their spending and roster construction in the weeks ahead.
