Disney’s decision to change a key detail in the original Snow White has angered fans.
Snow White is currently Disney’s most controversial film project to date. The film has been criticized for many reasons, such as the casting of Rachel Zegler with dark skin as Snow White, her less attractive appearance compared to Gal Gadot’s Evil Queen, or the use of special effects to create dwarfs. Recently, the actress born in 2001 sparked outrage when she revealed another detail that broke the original of the film.
In an interview with Variety, Rachel Zegler addressed the constant criticism Snow White has received from fans, especially over her skin color. According to the original Grimm fairy tale, Snow White was named because she had “skin as white as snow, hair as black as ebony, lips as red as blood.” However, Rachel revealed that Disney will be doing a different origin for the princess. “It’s going to be a different version of the fairy tale Snow White, who survived a blizzard when she was a child,” the West Side Story star said. “So the king and queen decided to name her Snow White to remind her of her toughness . ”
“One of the core points of our film for any woman or young person is to remember how strong you really are ,” she added. Rachel’s explanation further angered social media. Many critical comments: “I can’t believe Disney twisted the original to suit the actor’s skin color.” “Why not cast a white person in the original to make it less complicated?”, “My childhood felt insulted after reading this Snow Storm article,” “Disrespecting fans of the original animated series should be boycotted,” “Then why not just name it Snowflake. It’s so fitting for Disney right now.”
Previously, Rachel Zegler herself made shocking statements, receiving a lot of criticism from netizens when she called Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs – the film that won an Oscar in 1937 – outdated because it let the princess be rescued by the prince.
