We just got a surprise on NHL waivers.

While Dante Fabbro’s name was already mentioned in trade rumors involving the Montreal Canadiens, the Nashville Predators have now placed him on waivers.

Dante Fabbro Placed on Waivers

This is a big decision by Barry Trotz.

The lack of depth on the right side of the Montreal Canadiens’ defense could prompt Kent Hughes to claim this former first-round pick, 17th overall in 2016, and Boston University product from the NCAA.

According to several experts, the 17th overall pick from the 2016 Draft could truly be the player who finally pushes Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton to turn to waivers for reinforcement in the lineup.

The rumor has been circulating for a few days that the Canadiens would like to make a move to improve their roster. Currently, there are two left-handed defensemen playing on the right side for the Habs, namely Kaiden Guhle and Jayden Struble.

At 26, Fabbro is a right-handed defenseman, earning $2.5 million per year, with his contract expiring this summer. In six games this season, he has no points.

Over 315 career games in the NHL, he has tallied 72 points, including 16 goals.

Kent Hughes and the rest of the NHL teams have 24 hours (tomorrow 2:00 PM) to claim him. If he goes unclaimed, he’ll clear waivers and can be assigned to the Milwaukee Admirals in the AHL.

More details to come.
