A 41-27 win against Texas Tech looks good on paper for the Colorado Buffaloes, but fans who watched the game know how rough the first quarter looked for them.
After Texas returned the opening kickoff 46 yards, their QB Behren Morton hit tight end Jalin Conyers for a 17-yard score three plays later. Though the Buffs’ defense looked better after this, their opponent had already taken a 13-0 lead. If Deion Sanders’ team wants to keep winning, they will have to learn from this mistake and start faster.
Their next game is against Utah on November 16, and they need to make some changes. Owing to this, they came together for a meeting in the conference room to address the gaps in their games. Coach Prime was heard saying, “If they stop us from scoring, we allow it from the 30-yard line to the 30-yard line. Our coordinators are going to be excellent. They going to study, they are prepared, they going to be excellent.”
“That’s the places on the field I think we have the most problems. From 30 to 30, we are going to be dominant and we are going to be excellent. Defensively, we are going to stop the run, we are going to take three away. That’s what I want to happen. Stop the run, take three away on passing downs and we good.”
Well, in the game against Texas in Lubbock, the Buffs’ defensive line did their best. In fact, Amari McNeill stepped up despite his team being riddled with injuries on the defensive line. Rayyan Buell, Shane Cokes, and Taurean Carter were out, but defensive tackle MeNeill was there to respond with nine tackles, three TFLs, and 1.5 sacks.
Further, even edge rushers BJ Green II, Keaten Wade, Samuel Okunlola, and Arden Walker together recorded 14 tackles, 8.5 TFLs, five sacks and two forced fumbles. Plus, with just one minute remaining in the fourth quarter, Arden Walker forced a fumble that was recovered by safety Shilo Sanders. The latter returned it for a touchdown.

Further in the meeting, Deion Sanders stated, “Offensively, let us just do what we do. … I want ten minutes longer on the walkthroughs tomorrow morning because I don’t like what we did today in practice. I really don’t, I don’t think you were focused. I don’t think you were really on it like you normally prepare. So lets add ten minutes to the walkthrough tomorrow.”
What is their aim for the next game? Well, Sanders said, “We start fast. It ain’t no dealing with us. You can’t mess with us. You cannot be on that same field with us and we are going to take them out of the game early because we are going to start fast defensively.”
If we look back at their game against Texas Tech, the Colorado Buffaloes’ defense set up two turnovers in plus-territory, but their offense could only get a field goal in the final quarter. The team ran 17 plays but picked up only nine yards with four drives resulting in three-and-outs. Though the defense did what it could, fans would also like to see the offense come through with better play later in the game. But what was Deion Sanders’ immediate reaction to the Texas game?
Colorado Buffaloes versus Texas Tech: Deion Sanders’ post-game response
Saturday’s game was what you call a nail-biting one! Even though the Buffs had a victory, it was a neck-to-neck fight. The Texas Tech fans too lost their patience as they started throwing beer bottles and cans. However, Coach Prime had nothing to do but report it to the referees. But they too turned dead ears as they pointed to Deion’s boys blowing kisses, adding to their rage after scoring touchdowns. Thus, the Buffs HC sounded a lot calmer during the press conference.
But he shared his thoughts on the Jones AT&T Stadium mishap. Sanders shared, “[Tortillas are] soft, not hard. But when they start throwing water bottles and those other objects, that’s when you’ve got to alarm the officials and say, ‘OK, now, tortillas are one thing, but water bottles [are] another thing that get a little crazy. But I’m thankful, I think Joey grabbed the microphone.”
After all, it is a tradition for Texas fans to throw tortillas on the field. But do you know what Buffs’ dual-threat did?
When a tortilla came flying his way, Travis Hunter caught hold of it and stuffed it inside his pants. So now you know where the two-way phenom got this chill attitude from. Of course, from their Captain Cool, Deion Sanders. However, the Buffs HC would never tolerate his program not giving their 100%. In that case, all the fun disappears.
