“This is completely false”: Snoop Dogg’s claim of Kobe Bryant’s 81-Point game shoes gets shutdown by sneaker expert Darryl Glover
Snoop Dogg has long been recognized as an avid Los Angeles Lakers fan, often seen courtside at their games or sporting the team’s colors. His passion for the Lakers and admiration for Kobe Bryant have been a defining part of his public persona. Recently, Snoop shared an intriguing story during a live stream with content creator Kai Cenat, claiming that he owned a shoe worn by Bryant during the legendary 81-point game against the Toronto Raptors. Adding further allure to his claim, Snoop mentioned that the shoe was autographed by Bryant, a gesture that undoubtedly emphasized their unique connection.
Snoop Dogg’s Kobe Bryant shoe story questioned by sneaker experts
Snoop proudly displayed the sneakers, which were even signed by Kobe himself, leaving Kai Cenat visibly impressed. However, sneaker enthusiasts and Kobe Bryant fans quickly pointed out a glaring inaccuracy. The sneakers in question were identified as Nike Kobe AD Mids, a model that wasn’t released until 2017.
Darryl Glover, a prominent sneaker enthusiast managing a Kobe Bryant fan page on Instagram, noted that the displayed shoe was not from the era of Bryant’s iconic game. According to Glover’s post on X (formerly Twitter), he stated, “This is completely false. This isn’t the same shoe or the same model that Kobe wore when he scored 81 points in 2006. The shoe in that frame is the Kobe AD Mid, that released in 2017.”
Further scrutiny revealed that the shoe Snoop showcased was indeed a Nike Kobe AD Mid, which made its market debut in 2017, over a decade after Bryant’s unforgettable scoring feat. During his historic performance on January 22, 2006, Kobe had been wearing the Nike Zoom Kobe 1s, a fact well-known among Kobe memorabilia collectors and basketball fans.
Snoop’s enthusiasm and love for the Lakers are unmistakable, yet even genuine fandom is now subject to the ever-watchful eye of those dedicated to preserving the accuracy and authenticity of iconic sports moments. Whether a simple misunderstanding or a misremembered detail, Snoop’s story highlights how sports memorabilia is scrutinized closely in today’s digital era, where true fans seek accuracy as a form of respect for the legends they admire.
