15-time major champion Tiger Woods announced that he had back surgery to address spasms.
The announcement was made on his social media platforms on Friday: “This morning, Tiger underwent lumbar micro-decompression surgery to treat nerve compression in his lower back.”
The statement also confirmed the surgery was a success: “Dr. Sheeraz Qureshi from the Hospital for Special Surgery in West Palm Beach performed the surgery and said it was successful.”
Woods added: “The surgery went smoothly and I am hopeful that this will help alleviate the spasms and pain in my back that I have been experiencing for much of the 2024 season. I look forward to getting through the recovery period and getting ready to return to my normal life, including playing golf.”
This is the sixth back surgery of Woods’ career, following a disappointing season in which he had little opportunity to compete. His first appearance of the 2024 season came at the Genesis Invitational in February, where he withdrew in the second round due to a bout of the flu.
Woods then played in the Masters, where he made the cut, but failed to make the cut at the PGA Championship, the US Open and The Open, where he did not make the cut.
Despite this, Woods has not shown any signs of ankle problems, following foot surgeries in 2023. However, he has been battling back spasms throughout that time, which has forced him to undergo another surgery.
It is not yet known whether Tiger Woods will be fit enough to play in the Hero World Challenge, which he hosts, or the PNC Championship with his son Charlie, both of which are scheduled for December.
