Barack Obama is celebrating an unconventional 10-year anniversary.

Back on Aug. 28, 2014, Obama sparked an unexpected debate about the tan suit that he wore during a press conference at the White House about combating ISIS in Syria.

But in celebration of “suitgate,” the former president, 63, gave the current Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris a shout-out on his Instagram. In Obama’s Wednesday, Aug. 28, post, he shared a side-by-side photo of his notorious look alongside Harris’ recent flared-leg tan suit designed by Chloé creative director Chemena Kamali.

“How it started. How it’s going. Ten years later, and it’s still a good look! IWillVote.com,” Obama wrote in the Instagram caption.

At the time of Obama’s suit backlash, he wore a tan suit with a gray striped tie. Following his press conference, several people criticized the president for his ensemble’s “lack of seriousness.” Although numerous past presidents, including Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton, have sported the outfit in the same hue, some critics said his suit resembled an outfit he would wear to a Hamptons party.

Harris, 59, wore the Chloé suit during the first night of the Democratic National Convention on Monday, Aug. 19. She paired it with a Chloé cream crepe de chine lavallière blouse and patent leather tan pointed-toe pumps.

Although the exact style of Harris’ suit is not available for purchase, a similar double-breasted version of her jacket is available on Chloé’s website. (The color is listed as coconut brown — which appears to be a play on Harris’ memeable quote.)

Following the vice president’s Aug. 19 appearance, several people, from news outlets to X (formerly known as Twitter) users, pointed out the two suits’ resemblance.

 “She’s wearing a tan suit … I can’t stop laughing. SO good. #VOTEforKamala #DNCConvention2024,” one person wrote on X.

Political commentator and author Tim Miller wrote that she is “baiting Fox into an entire week of tan suit coverage.”

The following evening, both President Obama and Michelle Obama spoke at the DNC in support of Harris.

Barack said during his speech, “We have a chance to elect someone who has spent her entire life trying to give people the same chances America gave her. Someone who sees you and hears you, and will get up every single day and fight for you.”

He continued: “America is ready for a new chapter. America is ready for a better story. We are ready for a President Kamala Harris. And Kamala Harris is ready for the jump.”

Meanwhile, Michelle, 60, said that she could feel something “magical” in the room as people looked at their new Democratic presidential nominee.

“America, Hope is making a comeback,” she declared. “To be honest, I am realizing that until recently, I have mourned the dimming of that hope. And maybe you have experienced the same feelings: That deep pit in my stomach, a palpable sense of dread about the future,” she added.
