NFL fans noticed the same interesting thing about legendary announcer Al Michaels during the New York Jets-New England Patriots “Thursday Night Football” game at MetLife Stadium.
The 79-year-old Al Michaels and Kirk Herbstreit kicked off their third season of TNF together with Amazon Prime Video last week, calling the Miami Dolphins-Buffalo Bills game at Hard Rock Stadium.
Before kickoff for tonight’s game, fans noticed that Michaels was wearing a slick silver-colored tie to complement his dark suit. And social media absolutely loves Mr. Michaels’ tie of choice:
Al Michaels was the play-by-play voice of NBC “Sunday Night Football” from 2006 through the 2021 season. He worked with the late and legendary John Madden for three seasons before Cris Collinsworth took over following the Hall of Famer’s retirement.
After Michaels and Collinsworth called Super Bowl 56 between the Los Angeles Rams and Cincinnati Bengals, the former left the network and signed with Amazon. Former ESPN “Monday Night Football” play-by-play man Mike Tirico replaced Michaels in the broadcast booth.
As previously noted by Ryan Glasspiegel of the New York Post, Al Michaels’ contract with Amazon runs up after this season. Michaels has been mum on retirement talk, and it’s unclear if Amazon would want to extend him beyond this season.
For now, Michaels and Herbstreit have just under four months remaining in the broadcast booth this season. Next week, they’re in New York to call the Giants’ home game against the NFC East rival Dallas Cowboys.
2024 Could Be The Last Season Of Al Michaels’ Legendary Career
Michaels turns 80 years of age in November but certainly looks like someone who can go for a few more seasons. Of course, there’s a good possibility that Michaels’ future as an NFL commentator won’t be entirely up to him.
He remains widely popular among sports fans, but Amazon might have a tough time passing on the chance to bring in another marquee name to take over their TNF packages.
