The New York Yankees made it fairly clear back in 2022 that they were open for business regarding Gleyber Torres, floating his name at the trade deadline in search of pitching upgrades a full 2.5 years before his free agency.
While they weren’t able to find a match (Miami’s fault?), the writing was on the wall, and Torres’ future remained unsecured at every pivot point from that point forward, from the Winter Meetings to future deadlines.
Somehow, he stuck around, though, battling back from a nasty, mood-altering slump in summer ’22 (post-rumors) to become one of the team’s best offensive players in 2023 and a force from the leadoff spot after making a change during a tumultuous summer in 2024. He totaled 138 bombs in seven years as a Yankee (one partial 2020 season included), never again reaching his All-Star peak of 2018-19, but remaining a cornerstone player (prone to occasional lapses).
As if the Yankees hadn’t telegraphed his departure enough last week, when Brian Cashman praised Caleb Durbin and declined to describe the things Torres was “not as good at” (while still putting that energy into the air), the slugger put the icing on the cake on Monday afternoon.
Torres appears to have wiped his Instagram clean of references to the Yankees — it’s standard practice, considering he’s currently not on the roster, but still, it looks a bit harsh to see it done in one emotional sweep.
And, while always difficult to tell for certain, he appears to have unfollowed the Yankees as well. We don’t have proof he was ever following the Yankees (he more than likely … was), but he certainly is no longer.

Now, Torres will head out onto the open market, likely to be replaced by either Durbin or a Jazz Chisholm position shift, as the Yankees get financially conscious overnight. The Blue Jays are the only team we’ve heard legitimately connected with him so far, but without a qualifying offer attached, it’s likely that Torres’ market will materialize decently quickly.
