Justin Timberlake has posted a tribute to the late Quincy Jones, who died on Sunday, Nov. 3 at the age of 91.

“A once in a lifetime artist,” Timberlake, 43, posted to Instagram on Monday, Nov. 3, along with three photos of himself with the legendary musician from a 2017 dinner.

“His list of accolades goes on and on,” he continued. “The example of excellence at craft. A mentor to so many that have followed. Growing up listening to so many of his timeless works shaped so much of the music that I wanted to make or be a part of. The maestro behind so many of my favorite artists.”

The “Can’t Stop This Feeling” singer went on to share that Jones had been a personal mentor to him on a number of occasions.

“And then, to take a journey myself into the world of being an artist and getting to be in his presence and spend time talking about music and life. There were so many bits of guidance he gave me along the way that I will take with me forever… to know so many of his family and to find out how amazing they all are as humans and artists themselves… a direct reflection of the love he gave… and the love he appreciated.”

After writing that he has a “heavy heart today,” the pop star shared that he considers himself lucky to have experienced Jones’ work, and sent condolences to all of the musician’s family and friends.

“RIP, King,” the Friends with Benefits star concluded. “Your contribution will live on forever and ever. What a journey you have taken us all on.”

Others to have already posted tributes to the music icon include fans and collaborators such as Whoopie Goldberg, Elton John and LL Cool J.

Jones’ publicist confirmed to PEOPLE that the music titan died at his home in Los Angeles surrounded by family.

“Tonight, with full but broken hearts, we must share the news of our father and brother Quincy Jones’ passing,” the family said in a statement. “And although this is an incredible loss for our family, we celebrate the great life that he lived and know there will never be another like him.”

“He is truly one of a kind and we will miss him dearly; we take comfort and immense pride in knowing that the love and joy, that were the essence of his being, was shared with the world through all that he created. Through his music and his boundless love, Quincy Jones’ heart will beat for eternity.”

Jones is survived by his seven children: Rashida Jones, Kidada Jones, Kenya Kinski-Jones, Quincy Jones III, Jolie Jones Levine, Martina Jones, and Rachel Jones, as well as three grandchildren.
