The Montreal Canadiens staff, specifically those working at the Bell Center, are under major fire for throwing away the Johnny Gaudreau tribute items daily.
Last Thursday truly was a sad day in the world of hockey, having lost both Matthew and Johnny Gaudreau, two very well-liked souls within the NHL community. Across the nation, fans paid respect by remembering them.
From all over the league, fans reached out by crafting in-arena memorials, which have reached practically every city. These memorials have turned into places of gathering and reflection, with the most prominent displays at Nationwide Arena in Columbus and the Saddledome in Calgary, places where the Gaudreau family has left an indelible mark.
Flowers, jerseys, and sweet notes from the fans are a testament to the hockey community that is tight-knit. A testimony to the love and respect the Gaudreau family gets from the fans. These support messages, though, have not been welcomed in all arenas. In Montreal’s Bell Center, the fans find that the memorials put up outside the arena get taken down each night, and many question where the organization stands.
These were not isolated incidents, as the removals happened several times over the weekend. Because of this, frustrations have grown within the fanbase. Curiously, back in 2022 when Canadiens legend Guy Lafleur died, the area outside the Bell Centre was allowed to remain a public memorial for several days, without any disturbance by staff.
The organization has yet to respond, but one cannot help but ask, is this any way for a team to treat such touching tributes? There seems to be a major lack of communication and/or disrespect, which is making everyone feel the loss even more, and many are left wondering why an organization like the Montreal Canadiens, who claim to have so much respect for great NHL players, is deciding to treat Johnny Gaudreau in this manner…
