More than ever, the Milwaukee Bucks need Khris Middleton to keep their championship window open. But the All-Star wing’s latest surgery on his ankle may be a concern that will affect the team’s chance of winning a ring.

A couple of months ago, Middleton had arthroscopic surgery on both ankles, with an optimistic recovery timeline that suggests he will be ready for the NBA season opener. The surgeries were necessitated by injuries he sustained during the previous season, particularly a left ankle sprain incurred in February when he landed awkwardly after a jump shot.

This injury continued to affect him throughout the season. Additionally, a minor procedure on his right ankle was performed in mid-June to address lingering issues from a sprain he suffered in the playoffs against the Indiana Pacers.

Middleton’s injury history has been a concern over the past few years, impacting his availability and performance. He played only 33 games in the 2022-23 season due to knee complications and managed just 55 games last season. This lack of consistent play has raised questions about his durability, especially as the Bucks look to compete for another championship.

Why Khris Middleton’ Ankle Woes Should Be a Reason for the Milwaukee Bucks to be Concerned

As it stands, Middleton’s health is one of the major concerns Milwaukee should prepare for ahead of the 2024-25 season. This is explained in Grant Hughes’ NBA analysis for Bleacher Report.

“Multiple ankle surgeries in the same offseason aren’t ideal for any player, but they’re especially troubling for one who’s only logged 88 games across the last two years.

Khris Middleton proved last season that he could still contribute excellent per-minute production, but lower-body health issues have reduced his night-to-night impact. Hopefully these latest operations will get him back on the floor regularly, and he’ll re-assume his previous All-Star status.

Pragmatically, it’s hard to imagine a 33-year-old reversing such alarming downward trends on the health front,” Hughes wrote.

With significant offseason acquisitions, including Gary Trent Jr. and Taurean Prince, the Bucks still rely heavily on their core group, which includes Middleton, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Damian Lillard, and Brook Lopez.

Middleton’s ability to return to form is crucial, as he provides essential secondary playmaking and scoring. As the team aims to enhance its offense while compensating for the loss of perimeter defense from Jrue Holiday’s departure, Middleton’s contributions will be vital in maintaining their competitive edge.
