The New Jersey Devils find themselves in need of a goalie, now that their goaltender Jacob Markstrom was injured last night.
We mentioned this earlier today, but this is an injury that could have an impact on the Montreal Canadiens.
If Jake Allen plays 40 games or more for New Jersey, the Canadiens will receive a valuable 2nd-round draft pick, and with Markstrom’s unfortunate injury, Allen is likely to play a lot over the next few weeks.
Will he reach 40? That is the question.
Cayden Primeau traded to the New Jersey Devils to fill an immediate need there?
Another interesting aspect to analyze here is the following.
Who will be Jake Allen’s backup in New Jersey for the next few weeks?
We know that the path to Montreal is blocked for Cayden Primeau, despite his strong performances with the Laval Rocket, simply because Jakub Dobes seems to really be with the Canadiens for good.
However, could Kent Hughes take advantage of this situation to give Primeau a new opportunity by trading him to New Jersey?
This is a possibility that has just been raised.
I’m eager to see how Jacob Markstrom’s situation will unfold in New Jersey. Jake Allen will take on the role of short-term number one, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they try to provide him with better support.
The Canadiens might receive a call about Cayden Primeau. Primeau wouldn’t be difficult to trade due to his salary and the fact that he cleared waivers. A team could acquire him and keep him in the AHL in the short term.
That being said, there’s no rush for the Canadiens. Despite his critics, Primeau remains a solid call-up option in case of injury. You don’t want to find yourself without a backup plan during the final stretch of the season.
Primeau’s record in Laval since being sent down: 5-0, 1 SO, 1.58 GAA, .932 SV%.
– Anthony Martineau
In 5 games with the Laval Rocket since his demotion down, Primeau has an impeccable record of 5-0-0, a goals-against average of 1.58, and a save percentage of .932.
What a comeback for the young goaltender!
He has certainly increased his value.
Knowing that Kent Hughes and Tom Fitzgerald (the Devils’ GM) seem to get along well on the trade market, and knowing that they’ve already completed a trade together involving a goalie, do you think this is a realistic possibility?
Personally, I would be happy for Primeau, but at the same time, I like the idea of him being a number 1 goalie for the Laval Rocket.
If the Devils want him, they will have to pay in my opinion, but it’s a possibility to consider if they want a temporary solution alongside Jake Allen (who obviously knows Primeau very well and works well with him).
