The Detroit Police Department is investigating an incident involving Detroit Lions star wide receiver Jameson Williams that was captured on officers’ bodycam footage.
According to Ross Jones of WXYZ, Jameson Williams was pulled over by officers of the Detroit Police Department after midnight on Oct. 8, two weeks before the NFL suspended him for violating their PEDs policy.
WYXZ obtained footage of the incident, which shows officers pulling over a vehicle driven by Williams’ brother. Jameson was also in the vehicle, and his brother informed the cops that they had two guns in the vehicle.
The cops are told in the video that Jameson’s brother has a concealed pistol license. One cop tells Williams that he’ll be taken into custody, and the wide receiver informs him that he plays for the Detroit Lions.
Jameson Williams informs the officer that he carries the gun for possession. Even though he was handcuffed and briefly placed in the officers’ car, Williams was released and not taken to jail.
Speaking to WXYZ, Detroit Police Commander Michael McGinnis expressed confusion over why Williams wasn’t arrested and taken into custody. Here’s McGinnis’ statement to the outlet:
“I feel that there was probable cause to arrest, and he was under arrest by the patrol officer. And because of that, he should have been conveyed to the Detroit Detention Center and processed.”
The Lions traded up to select the Alabama wide receiver 12th overall in 2022. He missed all but six games in his rookie year recovering from a torn ACL, and he was suspended four games in 2023 for violating the NFL’s gambling policy.
We’ll provide more details and information on this matter when they become available.
