After garnering attention as the first overall pick in the 2023 NBA draft, San Antonio Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama gained fame by winning the Rookie of the Year. Though the Spurs struggled in his rookie season, for his rise in stardom, Patrick Beverley even claimed that he would end up being the best player in the upcoming season.
While a championship may still be a distant goal for the young star, former NBA player Jeff Teague believes Wembanyama could earn an MVP nod early in his career. On the Club 520 podcast, Teague expressed his confidence in Wembanyama’s abilities if the Spurs can make the playoffs.
“I think he got a chance to be MVP this year, to be honest. He damn near can win MVP this year because he’s averaged 20 points, ten rebounds, about five blocks. I think the Spurs ain’t gonna be in the top 4, but I think they’re gonna make the playoffs,” Teague said.
“If they get to the sixth to seventh seed and win the play-in in the West, he might win MVP because their roster is a**,” he added.
Victor Wembanyama Finds Inspiration In WNBA Rookie Caitlin Clark
Just like NBA rookie sensation Wembanyama, WNBA star Caitlin Clark has quickly risen to fame in her rookie season. Clark is just starting her professional career, but Wembanyama revealed that she inspires him among WNBA players.
During a recent press conference, reporters asked Wembanyama about which WNBA player had the most influence on him. Without skipping a beat, he named Clark.
“When she was in college, the only college player that I was really in awe of the game, you know. I’m saying men’s and women’s college basketball; she’s probably the most impressive I’ve seen,” Wembanyama said.
Wembanyama’s squad will begin their season against the Oklahoma City Thunder on October 8. With Clark serving as his inspiration, it will be interesting to see if Wembanyama can guide the Spurs to the playoffs and secure the MVP title this season.
