Marvel Studios’ highly anticipated reboot of Blade has once again been delayed, shifting its release from the previously scheduled date of November 7, 2025. Instead, Disney has decided to launch Predator: Badlands, directed by Dan Trachtenberg, who is well-known for his successful Predator prequel, Prey, which premiered on Hulu in 2022.
This change in schedule marks a significant pivot for Disney as they aim to refocus on theatrical releases to maximize box office potential, particularly in the wake of former CEO Bob Chapek’s departure. The delay of Blade, starring Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali, highlights the project’s tumultuous production journey, which has been fraught with challenges since its announcement at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019.
Originally set to begin filming in 2022 under director Bassam Tariq, Blade faced numerous setbacks, including Tariq’s exit and the subsequent departure of Yann Demange from the director’s seat. The project has sparked significant interest, especially due to its storied history in superhero cinema.
The original Blade trilogy, featuring Wesley Snipes, is credited with breaking new ground as one of the first R-rated superhero franchises, beginning with 1998’s Blade, released by New Line Cinema. This trilogy, which also includes Blade II (2002) and Blade: Trinity (2004), was a box office triumph, grossing a combined total of $418.1 million worldwide.
Mia Goth, who is set to portray the villain Lilith in the upcoming reboot, recently commented on the film’s delays. She emphasized Marvel’s commitment to delivering a high-quality production, stating, “They really care… They want to make a great movie.” This dedication reflects the studio’s ambition to meet the high expectations of fans who have been eagerly awaiting the revival of the Blade franchise.
In a nostalgic twist, Wesley Snipes made a cameo appearance as Blade in Deadpool & Wolverine, which has become the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, raking in an impressive $1.3 billion globally. This cameo has reignited interest in the character and the franchise as a whole, showcasing the lasting impact of Snipes’ portrayal.
Looking ahead, Marvel has a packed release schedule in the coming years, including Captain America: Brave New World set for February 2025, Thunderbolts in May, and Fantastic Four in July. Despite the delays surrounding Blade, fans can still anticipate an exciting lineup from Marvel, with three untitled films planned for February 18, May 5, and November 10 in 2028.
As the studio continues to navigate production challenges and strategic shifts, the focus remains on delivering compelling stories that resonate with audiences, ensuring that when Blade finally hits theaters, it will be a worthy addition to the superhero legacy.
